Why are women always depicted as paler than men in art?
An atavistic longing to be moor'd (blacked) you say?
man: skin like leather from working hard under the sun
woman: kept inside, safe from sun and work; like dainty porcelain doll
In classical times, it was a status thing. Pale skin means not spending time in the sun, which means you were rich enough that you didn't have to work in the fields.
