Hey /trv/. So I just hosted a French guy for a couple days who had been travelling around 3 months....without money. He had used money twice when circumstances forced him to (crossing USA border from canada, apparently you HAVE to pay $6, also for a flight from the canaries to Quebec when he realised he would get even MORE seasick then just from Casablanca to there), but the main method of supporting himself and movement was by hitchhiking, and asking the people who picked him up if they could help him out on his journey. He would offer his services in whatever, work or housework or making breakfast etc etc, in exchange for passage and a place to stay and all that. He started in Brittany where he is from, then went all the way down through Spain to Morocco, asked around the ports for a boat who wanted another passenger, got to Quebec by flying as mentioned, across to Vancouver, finally got to me in the Bay Area. He is planning on going down to Chile and perhaps crossing by a shipping boat, or another sailboat if necessary, over to Australia, up to China thence to Russia and then back over to France ASAP.

I am thinking of doing the same, but what sort of things should I pack? Anybody ever do anything similar?

I will post the name of the blog his mom is keeping for him when he next responds to me as I forgot the address. He adamantly didn't want to keep one, as he works in technology at home lol. Also....it would be in French obviously, but I'm sure you could just Google Translate most of it.

Just basic shit. Some weather resistant clothes, flashlight, pocket knife/leatherman, toothbrush, toothpaste, emergency money, towel, shower gel, medicine if you need any.

Stuff like cellphone, map etc. is optional and depends on how you're planning to live during your trip.

sounds great! thanks!

NOT like a stupid person like Chriss McCandless, maps are fine with me, and cell phones are a must for emergencies (although would be off the majority of the time)

any other reccomendations?

I'm not quite sure what your plan is in regards of tarveling. Do you want to spend some time in nature or just stick with towns/cities? If you plan on being outside, you'll need a tent + sleeping back + camping mat/blanket, a cooking device (technically you could just collect wood and start fires, but a gas cooker is easier to handle and saves a lot of time) + matches/lighter and you'll have to carry some food along. Perhaps a compass though if you have GPS on your phone, it wouldn't be necessary, for better orientation and binoculars, in case wildlife or the view get interesting. Also a camera, which probably = phone anyway. And you better do an IWO, motherfucker! :3 If you plan on being active during the night, a flashlight worn on your head might be more handy than a regular one.

>I'm not quite sure what your plan is in regards of tarveling.
don't really have one, i might try and go north from san francisco to near vancouver, canada and seattle and portland before that but i dont really know

>Do you want to spend some time in nature or just stick with towns/cities?
stick along the coast i think, which means both :D

medium size cities/small size, and some nature, i dont like huge cities

>If you plan on being outside
a little bit, but not like camping out every night

that shit sucks, i hate camping usually (although i have never done it alone so...dunno)

>you'll need a tent + sleeping back + camping mat/blanket, a cooking device + matches/lighter and you'll have to carry some food along.
k, that would be a LOT to carry though...sort of unrealistic to try to hitchike everywhere with that much gear

>Perhaps a compass though if you have GPS on your phone, it wouldn't be necessary
well i wouldnt want to wear out the phone battery in case i dont have access to a plug outlet, so a compass might be good

>binoculars, in case wildlife or the view get interesting. Also a camera
kk

what is an IWO?

There's special backpacks for outdoor activities, they have more storing volume than usual ones. Sleeping bag + camping mat usually can be attached to it on the outside in one way or another (careful when it rains though, a wet sleeping bag sucks) + you can carry a tent with your hands then.
But yeah, it's a lot of stuff and easier to move around, if you're with another person.

Maybe look for a decent backpack and test pack it beforehand, so that you know how heavy and full it'd be, then see if you could still hitchhike with it?

Technically you could spare the TP, if you use available public restrooms. But it's a nice thing to have in case of "emergency" and it's also useful for cleaning your knife/spoon etc.

Oh, thinking of it, duct tape might be of use as well.

>what is an IWO?
Neuschuchtel, bitte.

IWO = I Went Out --> Bernd takes more or less interesting pictures of what he did today or which place he visited and presents those to /int/ via a thread.
