Bernd with not much money here, my last vacation is years ago (travelled a lot with my backpack). And I've never been in western countries. A friend is in Australia right now and my plan is to visit him in 6 weeks. I found a open jaw flight for 1100 €. I think that's a pretty good deal. Unfortunately I can only spend 3 weeks in Australia, on the other side it's not that bad because short of money.
Do you think I can survive with 1500 € in Australia? The first days and the last days I have to spend alone, in the time between I can share the expenses with her hopefully. I will fly to Brisbane, travel to Byron Bay by Bus to meet her and fly back to Europe from Sidney.
Yes, I think you can survive.
So it comes down to 500€ = 800 AUSD per week? That's pretty decent I'd say. Australia is very expensive though. Brisbane and north/rural QL is cheaper than Sydney.
Cheap dorm bed in hostel 25-35 per night
cheap meal in pub 10-15
box of smokes 20-25 (lol)
pint of beer 8-10
You can also cook your own food, most "backpacker" hostels have a kitchen. It's really easy to steal expensive food at the self-service checkout in supermarkets. you take 500gr of prime cut beef filet and 500 gr of rice. you scan in the rice twice and place both the beef in the bags in the designated packing area (which has a weight detector). if staff comes up just say you're German in broken English and you don't understand. now you're a master thief. this saved me hundreds of dollars. also label expensive avocados as potatoes and so on...

That is like the most boring route ever. And why would you spend three weeks in Byron Bay? It is just a small village near the beach. If I was you I would definitely reconsider your plans. There is so much to see in Australia, don't waste your time in touristy shitholes.
